Summit 2016 - Population Health: Leadership for Building Healthier Communities

Prevention Institute (PI) and The College for Behavioral Health Leadership are co-hosting Summit 2016 - Population Health: Leadership for Building Healthier Communities this April 6-8, 2016 in San Diego. Conference participants will seek to identify and address opportunities for improvement, promote emerging consensus, contribute to the evolution of behavioral health and wellness, and positively impact the health of communities.

The Summit will feature:

  • Concurrent Facilitated Discussions: How do the behavioral health field and behavioral health providers engage in activism and collaborate in social justice/health equity movements? How do the behavioral health field and behavioral health providers apply a social justice and health equity lens to clinical practice? And how do the behavioral health field and behavioral health providers engage in the work of prevention across a continuum to include community engagement, community planning, health education, public policy, etc.?
  • Conversation Breakouts: What attributes and skills must leaders possess to support health/population health? How does the field build leaders for cross-system change and coalition building? And what new skills and competencies are needed to successfully engage in the transformation from individual-focused to community/population health and wellness?
  • Featured Speakers: Larry Cohen, MSW, Founder and Executive Director, Prevention Institute; Sheila Savannah, MA, Program Director, Prevention Institute; Anthony Iton, MD, JD, MPH, Senior VP for Healthy Communities, The California Endowment; and Marvin J. Southard, MSW, Mental Health Director Emeritus, County of Los Angeles Department of Mental Health.

Summit 2016 addresses Population Health: Leadership for Building Healthier Communities through interactive exploration of population health knowledge, practices, measurements, and skills. Participants will help actively shape the future of our field by identifying cutting-edge behavioral health leadership roles within collaborative population health strategies.

In addition, Summit participants will:

  • Explore current movements in population health and the implications for behavioral health;
  • Examine the intersections of health equity, social justice, and the social determinants of health;
  • Understand ways that population health is financed, assessed, and measured; and
  • Learn about place-based initiatives that are promoting healthy, equitable communities.
