SUMMARY:Webinar: Understanding the New Federal Demographic Data Standards
DESCRIPTION:On March 28th\, the federal Office of Management and Budget released revised standards for the collection of race and ethnicity data\, with the goal of better reflecting the diversity of the United States. These standards had not been updated since 1997\, which hampered health equity efforts that rely on data that accurately reflects our communities. CPEHN and other health equity stakeholders weighed in on proposed changes\, advocating for greater inclusion and granularity. \n  \nPlease join us on Thursday\, May 16 at 11am to learn what the new standards are and what they mean for California’s health equity efforts. Speakers will also address the extent to which the new standards accurately represent diverse communities\, and the work that remains to be done. \nRegister here: https://bit.ly/49pWyp6 \nSpeakers:\nIgnatius Bau\, Health Equity Consultant\nSeciah Aquino\, Latino Coalition for a Healthy California\nAmin Nash\, Arab American Civil Council\nDaniel Torres\, California Health and Human Services Agency\nAndrew Lee\, Southeast Asia Resource Action Center \n \nThis event is now over.\nTo read the summary of the webinar and Q&As from the panelists\, click here. \nTo view the slides from the presentation\, click here.

SUMMARY:Press Conference: Governor Newsom's Proposal to Eliminate In-Home Support Services (IHSS) for Seniors and Disabled Undocumented Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM PRESS CONFERENCE \nREGISTER HERE \nIn the 2025- 2026 May Budget Revision\, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed eliminating the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) benefit for seniors and disabled undocumented immigrants. This critical program serves thousands of Californians and would be taking away services for some of the state’s most needy based solely on immigration status\, a move that the California Pan-Ethnic Health Network (CPEHN) and other health and disability rights groups strongly oppose. \n“These services allow seniors and people with disabilities to meet their basic needs at home\, rather than be institutionalized or suffer without care\,” said Kiran Savage-Sangwan\, Executive Director of CPEHN. “Farmworkers\, construction workers\, and other essential undocumented workers built\, fed\, and supported California for decades. We cannot turn our backs on them now.” \nWe believe it is unacceptable to balance the state’s budget on the backs of the poorest and most vulnerable Californians. Rather than eliminating programs that impact the state’s poorest residents\, we urge the Legislature to consider more progressive solutions to ensure we have the resources of all Californians. \nWe want to give journalists and members of the public a chance to hear stories from impacted families and speak with experts and advocates about what the loss of the IHSS program for undocumented Californians could mean for communities of color in California. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, May 28\, 10 a.m. \nWHERE: https://cpehn-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ATO5NIQORMad8azmhuidjQ \nWHAT: Virtual Press Conference Discussing the Impact of the Loss of the In-Home Supportive Services Program for Undocumented Californians \n\nWHO: Impacted community members and families\, CPEHN\, Health Access\, Western Center for Law & Poverty\, Justice In Aging\, Disability Rights California\, California Immigrant Policy Center and SEIU California

SUMMARY:Updating California's Essential Health Benefits Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Call Summary\nCPEHN Senior Policy Director\, Cary Sanders highlighted recent changes to a federal rule that will advance health equity by making it easier for states to add additional benefits to private insurance such as dental care\, doula/CHWPR/peer services and durable medical equipment (e.g. wheelchairs\, hearing aids) as part of the state’s Essential Health Benefits/benchmark plan. \nCommunity Catalyst Policy Director\, Colin Reusch\, provided additional details on the federal rule change and timeline for updating state EHBs/benchmark plans. Reusch also highlighted a recently released report and survey by Community Catalyst which shows there is broad national\, bipartisan support (83%) for adding adult dental as an EHB. \nDMHC Director\, Mary Watanabe shared details on California’s joint public process with the Administration and Legislature for updating the state’s EHBs. The state must submit its proposed changes to the U.S. Health and Human Services Agency\, by May 2025 in order for the changes to go into effect in 2027. The next public hearing is scheduled for August 6\, 2024\, by the Senate and Assembly Health committees. \nWatch the webinar recording here. \nKey Links: \nSpeaker bios: \n\nColin Reusch: https://communitycatalyst.org/people/colin-reusch/\nMary Watanabe: https://www.dmhc.ca.gov/AbouttheDMHC/LeadershipTeam.aspx\n\nEssential Health Benefits/Public Comment: \n\nAugust 6\, 2024: Joint Hearing Assembly and Senate Health: Essential Health Benefits Information on the Hearing on 8/6/24\nJune 27\, 2024: DMHC Public Meeting Materials/EHB: Essential Health Benefits Meeting (ca.gov)\nCommunity Catalyst’s guide to the EHB benchmarking timeline: https://communitycatalyst.box.com/s/7si5f0v98e73oohw491cdvuid0ppmexx\n\nOral Health Disparities/Access to Dental Care: \n\nCPEHN’s most recent report on oral health equity: https://cpehn.org/publications/addressing-the-root-dismantling-systemic-barriers-to-oral-health-equity/\nCommunity Catalyst’s polling research (shows strong support for adding adult dental to EHBs): https://communitycatalyst.org/news/new-polling-voters-want-policymakers-to-do-more-to-address-health-and-economic-justice-make-health-care-more-affordable/\nCommunity Catalyst’s talking points on adding adult dental to EHB: https://communitycatalyst.box.com/s/az71077j731qywx36omeih25f3c05bfv
