Republican Members of Congress Responsible for Health Care Price Hikes, Devastating Medi-Cal Cuts & Clinic Closures

SACRAMENTO, CA – On the day the Republican-led Congress failed to fund the federal government, rejected restoration of Medicaid (Medi-Cal) coverage for millions of Americans, and let a critical deadline pass without extending funding that makes health care more affordable for 1.5 million Californians, health equity advocates with the California Pan Ethnic Health Network called to hold accountable the eight Republican members from California who supported HR1. The bill signed by Trump in July set the stage for these devastating health care consequences.

Kiran Savage-Sangwan, CPEHN Executive Director, made the following statement:

“1.5 million Californians enrolled in Covered California health plans will soon learn that their monthly health care premiums will rise by an average of 97% because Republicans in Congress care more about protecting tax breaks for the rich than making life more affordable for people in low-wage jobs. Native American and indigenous communities could soon find the doors to tribal health clinics locked because Republicans in Congress care more about Jeff Bezos’ bottom line than keeping the government open and ensuring kids can see a doctor.

“Sadly, these impacts to Californians’ health care are just a preview of what’s to come under the Trump/Johnson agenda as Republicans also refused to restore the devastating Medi-Cal cuts in HR1. Yet California leaders have the power to hold down the price of care, keep our hospitals and clinics open, protect our progress on health equity, and save lives. Raising revenues from corporations and the ultra wealthy who are raking in billions in Trump tax cuts, holding health corporations accountable to prioritize people’s health over profits, and leading on innovative ways to keep Californians covered are all tools California leaders can utilize to protect our health regardless of who is in the White House and Congressional leadership.”
