The tides of justice surged through this morning when the Supreme Court affirmed marriage equality nationwide. While 37 states and the District of Columbia currently recognize same-sex marriage, now under the 14th Amendment, all 50 states must issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and recognize same-sex unions that have been legally performed in other states.

The fight for marriage equality is a testament to the hard work, sacrifice, and enduring struggles by advocates within the LGBTQ community, a population that includes each of our nation’s diverse communities of color. Today, we stand together to celebrate love and the right for everyone to marry whom they choose. Tomorrow, we continue the work toward improving the health, wellness, and safety of all in the LGBTQ community.

This morning’s ruling shows us how far we have come since the disappointing ballot measure in California, Proposition 8, that sought to deny same-sex marriage. We share with all Californians the joy and love today’s victory brings.
