Trump Budget Plan Prioritizes Spending on Defense, Border Wall over Caring for Seniors, Students and Low-Income Californians

Trump Budget Plan Prioritizes Spending on Defense, Border Wall over Caring for Seniors, Students and Low-Income Californians

Last week, the Trump Administration unveiled a morally bankrupt budget that prioritizes spending on defense and a border wall, while cutting billions in funding for vital health and human services programs, housing, the arts and environmental protections. Rather than prioritizing cancer research, reducing homelessness, and educating all children, the President’s budget reinforces long-held ideologies that seek to punish Americans for being poor and immigrants for coming to the United States in search of a better future.

Specifically the budget proposes:

  • A $54 billion increase in defense spending
  • Over $3 billion more for deportations and a further militarized southern border
  • A complete elimination of arts, museums, libraries, and public broadcasting funding;
  • $2.5 billion in cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency;
  • $6.2 billion in cuts to Housing and Community Development;
  • $15.1 billion in cuts to Health and Human Services;

As callous as Trump’s plan may be, his policies are tired and unoriginal. Just as we always have, CPEHN will strengthen our resolve to resist. We will look towards our communities for leadership. We will work together to hold our representatives accountable. And we will strive to build more connected and resilient communities.
