Rep. David Valadao Stayed Silent – Refusing to Protect Kids, Seniors, People Fighting Cancer, People with Disabilities, Veterans while Other California Republicans Voted YES on a Plan that Guts Medi-Cal to Fund Tax Breaks for Greedy CEOs like Elon Musk

In a vote that could rip health care away from millions of Americans, House Republicans rushed through a resolution that directs budget committee members to slash $880B from Medicaid. California Republican members of Congress voted “Yes” on this resolution – including Reps. Kim (CA-40), Calvert (CA-41), LaMalfa (CA-1), and Kiley (CA-3). Rep. Valadao (CA-22) stood by and watched as his colleagues advanced this deadly agenda.

If these cuts become law, they will terminate health care for 15 million Californians including children, families, seniors who depend on nursing home care, people with disabilities, people fighting cancer, veterans, and home care workers.

Don’t be fooled by the bureaucratic shell game House Republicans are using to confuse the American people about their true intentions in this year’s budget. There is no more hiding behind procedure – the plan California Republicans are advancing funds tax breaks for greedy CEOs and massive corporations by terminating health care for millions of Californians.

California’s Republican members of Congress are choosing to stand with wealthy CEOs over their constituents who depend on Medi-Cal, which is why we are taking the fight for our health straight to their doorstep. In the coming weeks and months, our campaign will demand Republican leaders do the right thing and vote no on any budget bill that cuts health care for Californians.

Following a Senate vote last weekend to advance a budget framework that includes $880B in Medicaid cuts, Speaker Mike Johnson just jammed an identical resolution through the House. California Republicans joined leadership in supporting a budget plan that would gut Medi-Cal, terminating health care for millions of California residents.

The proposed cuts will gut Medi-Cal, destabilize our entire health care system and rip care for millions of Californians, from moms fighting cancer to children who need asthma medicine, to seniors relying on nursing homes and veterans who count on home care. It would significantly roll back California’s effort to confront the fentanyl crisis and would halt progress on mental health care. CA hospitals heavily rely on Medicaid funding and many would be at risk of cutting essential services, or closing their doors altogether.

Congressional committees are expected to meet after the April Recess (4/11-4/25) to begin the dissection process: making cuts that will require ending critical, life-saving health care programs to fund tax breaks for billionaires.
