Speaker Johnson’s Budget Proposal Would Gut Mental Health and Drug Treatment and Worsen Homelessness

The Republican-led House of Representatives opened the door to nearly a trillion dollars in Medicaid cuts over the next decade, a move that would have particularly severe consequences for people living with behavioral health conditions and their loved ones. One in three adults who experienced mental illness last year is enrolled in Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program.

The House Republican plan to gut Medi-Cal puts people served by these critical behavioral health services in severe jeopardy:

  • In-patient and out-patient psychiatric treatment and medications
  • Mobile crisis response services that are an alternative to law enforcement response for people in mental health crisis
  • Drug treatment programs, including opioid and fentanyl treatments
  • Housing support and homelessness prevention for people in treatment
  • Culturally responsive substance use treatment
